YouTube in China: what travelers and expats do

YouTube is one of the highest-volume search topics for travelers to China. The app and the website both fail to load on mainland networks. This page covers what is happening, and the standard workaround that gets YouTube working normally for travelers.

What happens without a VPN

Opening YouTube on a mainland network results in connection timeouts. The mobile app, the desktop site, YouTube Music, and YouTube Shorts all fail the same way. The videos themselves are not the problem — YouTube's servers cannot be reached from mainland networks at all.

Setup

1. Install UnblockMeVPN on the device you want to watch YouTube on.
2. Connect to Hong Kong or Tokyo (Tokyo is often slightly better for YouTube streaming, because Google's regional CDN is closer to Japan than to Hong Kong).
3. YouTube loads. Videos stream in full quality. Comments, subscriptions, and recommendations all work normally.

Streaming quality tips

• On hotel Wi-Fi, 1080p streams cleanly if the connection is decent. If it buffers, step down to 720p in the video quality menu.
• For 4K content, Tokyo is usually the better endpoint — Japan-to-Google's-CDN routes tend to have higher capacity than Hong Kong-to-Google.
• If you are on mobile data with a local Chinese SIM, download videos for offline playback before leaving Wi-Fi.
• YouTube Premium ad-free playback works identically to at home, as long as your Google account is logged in.

YouTube alternatives in China

• Bilibili (bilibili.com) — the closest Chinese analog. Different catalog, no Western creators, but wildly popular inside China
• Youku, iQIYI, Tencent Video — Chinese streaming platforms, mostly for Chinese TV and film
• Xiaohongshu (RED) — short-form video, closer to Instagram/TikTok than YouTube

Most international travelers do not switch to local alternatives — they use YouTube through a VPN. Both ecosystems side by side is normal.
