Gmail in China: why it fails and how travelers keep it working
Gmail is the most important Google service for most travelers, and it does not load on mainland networks without a VPN. Neither does Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Calendar, or Google Meet โ the entire Workspace suite behaves the same way. This page explains why and covers the standard setup that keeps email working.
What happens without a VPN
Opening Gmail on a mainland China connection results in a loading spinner that never resolves. The Gmail web app, the Gmail mobile app, and any third-party email client configured to fetch from Gmail's IMAP/SMTP servers all fail the same way โ they cannot reach Google's servers from mainland networks.
This affects:
- Gmail (personal and Workspace accounts)
- Google Calendar
- Google Drive and Google Docs
- Google Meet
- Google Keep, Tasks, and Photos
- Any app that authenticates via Google Sign-In
The standard setup
- Install UnblockMeVPN on your phone and laptop before leaving.
- Connect to Hong Kong or Tokyo.
- Gmail loads normally. Everything in Google Workspace follows.
If you rely on Gmail for work
A few specific recommendations for expats and remote workers using Gmail as their primary work email:
- Enable an authenticator app (not SMS 2FA) on your Google account before you leave home. SMS will not reach you if your home SIM is out of range.
- Set up an app password if you use a desktop email client like Thunderbird โ IMAP through a VPN works normally, but requires the app password.
- If Google's unusual-login detection ever challenges you, go through the VPN with your home-country server once, then switch back to Hong Kong for daily use.
- Consider connecting your VPN at the router level if you are in a single apartment for months โ Gmail stays connected silently in the background without you ever touching the VPN app.
Alternatives to Gmail
If you want a secondary email that works without a VPN on mainland networks:
- Outlook.com / Microsoft 365 โ works natively on mainland networks
- iCloud Mail โ works natively
- ProtonMail and Tuta โ need a VPN, same as Gmail
- Chinese providers (163.com, QQ Mail) โ work natively, but not suitable for primary international email
Most expats do not switch off Gmail. They just keep the VPN on.
Keep Gmail working from anywhere
Hong Kong and Tokyo on every plan. Gmail, Drive, Docs, Meet โ all load normally through the tunnel.
