Hong Kong VPN server: low-latency routes for users in East Asia

Hong Kong is one of two VPN server locations that materially changes the experience for users connecting from mainland China. The other is Tokyo. This page covers why Hong Kong matters, how our Hong Kong server is positioned, and what approximate performance to expect.

Most major VPN brands do not operate Hong Kong servers at all. That is not an accident — running a low-latency endpoint close to the mainland requires infrastructure decisions that large-scale affiliate-driven VPN brands are not set up to make. We chose differently.

Where the server sits

We currently operate one Hong Kong server in a Hong Kong data center close enough to mainland routes that it remains one of the lowest-latency options for southern China. Public copy should treat it as a nearby East Asia endpoint rather than promise a specific Chinese carrier path.

The biggest variable for mainland-China performance is the route your ISP takes to Hong Kong on that specific day. When the route is clean, round-trip latency from Shanghai to Hong Kong can sit in roughly the 30–50 ms range; when it is not, it can be materially higher. For video calls this is the difference between a clean conversation and a glitchy one.

For comparison, a Los Angeles VPN endpoint from Shanghai is typically 160–220 ms. That is fine for email and general browsing but uncomfortable for screen sharing and noticeable on any real-time voice or video.

Protocols available

Our Hong Kong servers run the full UnblockMeVPN transport stack:

• OpenVPN UDP — the simplest UDP option on cleaner networks
• OpenVPN TCP wrapped in Cloak (port 443) — the TLS-mimicking transport that looks like ordinary HTTPS to deep packet inspection
• Hysteria2 (QUIC/UDP with salamander obfuscation) — the newest transport, currently the fastest on networks that degrade standard UDP

The client picks the working transport automatically. On most mainland networks, Hysteria2 and the TCP/443 fallback are the two options that matter most.

When to use Hong Kong vs Tokyo

Both endpoints are usable from mainland China. Which one is faster depends on the hour and the hotel:

• Use Hong Kong for southern China (Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai) and for general browsing during off-peak hours
• Use Tokyo for northern China (Beijing, Tianjin, Dalian), during Hong Kong route congestion, and for anyone where the Hong Kong route feels sluggish on a given day
