Google Maps in China: what travelers actually use for navigation

Google Maps is the single most-missed app for tourists arriving in mainland China. It does not load on mainland networks, and even through a VPN the Chinese map data has quirks that make it a poor primary navigation tool. This page covers what actually works for getting around.

Why Google Maps is not the right primary nav tool in China

Two separate problems:

Google Maps will get you to major landmarks, hotels, and airports. It struggles with restaurants, small shops, and anything off the main roads.

What travelers actually use

AppNeeds VPN?Good for
Apple MapsNoBasic navigation, major destinations, English labels
Baidu MapsNoBest data for local places, Chinese-language interface
Amap / GaodeNoVery good data, includes English option, owned by Alibaba
Google MapsYesFamiliar interface, weaker data for mainland China, works for major destinations

Recommended setup

  1. Install Apple Maps (iPhone users, preinstalled) and/or Amap English (Android users) for local navigation.
  2. Keep Google Maps available for looking up destinations you already know by name, and for Street View outside China.
  3. Download offline maps before you leave β€” both Apple Maps and Amap support offline downloads for Chinese cities. This saves mobile data and works if the VPN drops.
  4. Learn the Chinese character for your hotel so you can show it to a taxi driver or subway attendant.
